Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Matthew Horrocks

A 30 Win Season Comes to an End in the NAIA Quarterfinals

Strijaous scores a game-high 28 points in the loss to ACU; Warriors end the year with the most victories in program history

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The greatest season in men's basketball history has met its end, as Jessup falls to Arizona Christian in the NAIA Quarterfinal round. Jessup ends the year with a program-record 30 wins while making the deepest postseason run in program history.

Head coach Lance Von Vogt offered praise to his roster after the game. "I couldn't be prouder of a group of young men for how they handled adversity through the season. The growth they experienced as people in the community and the brotherhood that they built in the team."

Just like Thursday, Jessup jumped out of the gates fast, taking a 6-1 lead after Tim Strijaous' steal led to a foul and two free throws on the opposite end. The Warriors got the lead up to eight as Myles Corey drove to the basket and converted a contested layup.

ACU charged back to even the score at 30 on a layup from Angelo Johnson. Johnson gave the Firestorm the lead at the break with a three just before the buzzer.

Jessup tied the game early in the second half on a triple from Jordan Adams. After a back-and-forth battle, the Warriors regained the lead with 11:31 remaining as Corey drained a three. Tarren Storey-Way followed it up with a three of his own, giving Jessup a four-point cushion.

But back came the Firestorm with a 10-0 run to take back the lead.

Johnson pushed ACU's lead to double-digits as he connected on a three-point play and a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions. The advantage reached as many as 14, as Jessup ran out of time for a season-saving comeback.

At the final horn, the scoreboard showed a 90-79 victory for the Firestorm.

ACU advances to the NAIA Fab Four, where they will take on Loyola-New Orleans. Jessup ends their season 30-7 overall, the most wins in program history.

Leading in the box score Saturday was Strijaous, who scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 from the field. Storey-Way contributed 13 in his final game with the Warriors. Cashemin Williams scored 12.

"We got contributions from everybody on the roster," added Von Vogt. "All the way up, everybody was a star in their role and allowed us to overcome the injuries and that we had all season long and put ourselves in position to compete for a national title. We have a lot to be proud of."

Johnson led the Firestorm with 22 points. ACU dominated the rebound battle, 46-26, scoring 18 second-chance points to Jessup's six.

The future looks bright for this Jessup program as they look to bring back the core of their lineup.

"The future's unbelievably bright for Jessup Basketball. It's never been stronger," added Von Vogt. "I think we're going to have one of the best, if not the best, backcourts in the country coming back next year with Myles, with Cash, and Ty Artis. We'll see what (Malik Corey) decides to do and whether or not he wants to go to grad school. So there's no reason that we can't be back in this place next year with designs to win the national title."

Von Vogt will give the Warriors two weeks off before the work begins for the 2022-23 season.
