REDDING, Calif. – Jessup hit the road for the first time this season Wednesday, making the trip north to Redding to face old rival Simpson University. An early goal for the host side proved to be the difference maker for 70 minutes until a much-needed equalizer rewrote the final feelings of the match.
Trailing 1-0 for most of the contest, the Warriors failed to muster up much of an attack, firing off just five shots in 85 minutes, compared to an even dozen by their opponents. Simpson had scored the match's lone goal in the 15th minute of play, giving them the one-goal advantage.
Head coach
Greg Lazaga spoke after the match, noting, "It was a tale of two halves for us. We came out and didn't play the style we had planned on. We allowed Simpson to take us out of any type of rhythm.
Finally, after facing a 70-minute deficit, the Warriors found the back of the net. Coming off an assist from
Sergio Medina. who played a perfect ball near the net,
Jordan Gallow sent home his first collegiate goal to equalize the match.
Lazaga added on the late tally, "We turned the corner in the second half and were able to put pressure on their half and their back line. The heads up defensive play and service from Sergio to Jordan ended up equalizing the match."
After 90 minutes of soccer, the final horn sounded, and for the first time, Jessup went home with a 90-minute draw. New to collegiate soccer, a rule was passed in the offseason negating overtime in non-postseason matches. Before the 2022 season, matches tied after 90 minutes would go to a golden goal overtime period.
Playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors was once again
Gerardo Perez Plata. After a shutout in his debut, Perez Plata allowed just the one goal while recording six saves.
Simpson fired three additional shots after the Jessup goal as they outshot the Warriors 15-6, with just a 7-5 advantage on shots on goal.
Following the draw, the Warriors move to 1-0-1 on the 2022 campaign.
Jessup now returns home to Rocklin to begin the first of four straight matches at home. The Warriors welcome Pacific Union College to Warrior Field on August 30 for a 4 p.m. start. Tickets to all home matches, including season tickets, are available online
