Four Goals Power the Warriors to Win No. One of the Fantahun Era

Gillespie nets goals three and four of the young season; Jessup to take on Cal Poly Humboldt and Simpson this weekend

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors have notched win number one of the Fantahun era after taking down Pacific Union College on Tuesday. Jessup put on a scoring display in front of their home fans and backed it up with a stout defense, as they earned a 4-0 shutout win.

For head coach Amsalu Fantahun, coaching just his second official contest at Jessup, Tuesday's win will be one he will never forget.

The Warriors got on the board in the 24th minute, thanks to the leg of Kennah Shaffer. Shaffer fired a shot on goal from over 30 yards out. Pacific Union's goalkeeper initially got her hands on the ball, but it slipped through her grip and over the goal line.

Goal number two came early in the second half when Kaylee Gillespie netted her third of the season. Coming off an assist from Shaffer, Gillespie swung her left leg from the top of the box and curled the ball past the outstretched reach of the keeper.

Gillespie was back at it in the 72nd minute, taking a rip from some 25 yards out that sailed over the cheating keeper.

For Gillespie, the reigning GSAC Freshman of the Year, it's four goals in two matches to start the season.

The Warriors tallied their final goal of the day in the 83rd minute, thanks to Aaliyah Grigsby. A fantastic ball up the middle of the field found Grigsby, who then drippled around the keeper and placed one into an empty net.

Jessup, scoring four goals in each match this season, keeps their goal-scoring average right where it was coming into Tuesday.

Defensively the Warriors produced a stout effort, holding the Pioneers to just seven shots, only one coming on goal. The Warriors outshot Pacific Union 21-7.

Madeline Jern got the nod in goal and played all 90 minutes. She recorded one save.

Jessup will hit the road for their next two contests, beginning Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. start at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Warriors wrap up the road trip on Saturday in Redding when they take on Simpson.
