ARCATA, Calif. – The Warriors packed their bags and headed north this week to begin a two-match road trip. Kicking things off against the Jacks of Cal Poly Humboldt, Jessup came up on the wrong side of a 2-0 outcome against their NCAA Division II counterparts.
Thursday marked just the second all-time meeting between the Warriors and the Jacks, but it was the first since the university renamed itself Cal Poly Humboldt (previously Humboldt State).
Humboldt was first to get on the board in this one, finding the back of the net just seven minutes in. Emma McChristie played a ball on the ground through some traffic from the top of the 18-yard box that snuck in on the far post.
The Jacks would score again 15 minutes into the second half when Frida Duran Arellano found the back of the net, giving them the eventual 2-0 final.
"We played very aggressive in the second half," said head coach
Amsalu Fantahun, happy with how his team closed out the match. "We played the way we wanted to play. The girls really fought to the last second and our team speed was good."
Madeline Jern got the start for the second match in a row. She recorded six saves in over 60 minutes of action.
Mya Rodriguez came off the bench to play the final half hour.
Humboldt outshot Jessup 19-5, as the Warriors recorded only two shots on goal.
Fantahun added that the team's morale is high after the match, noting, "Their spirits are high. Even though we lost, we really felt good about the way we played."
Jessup wraps up the road trip on Saturday when they take on Simpson University in Redding. Saturday's kick-off has been moved up to 10 a.m. to avoid the high temperatures expected later in the day.
The Warriors return home to Warrior Field on Friday, September 9, when they host UC Merced. Tickets are on sale now,
