VALLEJO, Calif. – After eight days off, the Warriors were back on the pitch Tuesday, taking on the California Maritime Keelhaulers in Vallejo. On a day where Jessup came close to a new record for shots taken, only three found the net, but it was enough to earn a shutout victory.
Jessup totaled 30 shots in the match, which ties for fifth most in program history. It's the most shot attempts by the Warriors since a record 35 against Pacific Union on September 23, 2019.
The 13th shot was the charm on Tuesday, as after a dozen attempts failed to find the net, lucky number 13 would cross the goal line off the foot of
Luis Castillo in the 36th minute. Assisted by
Sergio Medina, it's the senior midfielder's fourth goal of the season.
"Today was a good test of character," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "We had a lot of early open looks at goal that did not go in. Luis broke through on a beautiful delivery and opened up the score."
Jessup's 1-0 lead would hold for nearly 40 minutes, as again they fired shot-after-shot, but nothing wanted to cross the goal line. But finally, the scoreless drought ended, and when it did, it created an opportunity for Jessup to pile on.
Angelo Chavez netted the second goal of the day in the 72nd minute, coming off a
Javier Villa assist. Less than two minutes later, Chavez was assisting
Isaac Morfin, who helped the Warriors to score off a set piece and take a 3-0 lead.
Lazaga touched on the second half, offering, "The wind really affected the game in the second half and forced us into some tight situations. Angelo was a great threat second half and was rewarded with a good finish on goal. We have a quick turnaround game coming up, so on to recovery."
The Keelhaulers would only record 11 shots in the match, five of which came on goal. They did not have a shot on goal in the first half.
Jessup split goalkeeper duty on Tuesday, as
Antonio Camacho picks up the win after recording four saves while in goal.
Nick Forry entered in the second half and recorded one save.
The Warriors, now 3-1-2 this season, will be back on the field this Thursday when they take on Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Jessup returns home on September 29 for opening day of the GSAC season against Hope International.
