Labor Day Match Ends in a 4-1 Defeat

Ascencio scores for the second match in a row; Forry and Camacho combine for four saves in goal

ROCKLIN, Calif. – There was no Labor Day off for the Warriors as their schedule progressed with a home match against the (RV) UC Merced Bobcats. Facing a very fast and talented Bobcats squad, Jessup got behind early and didn't have the time to come back as they fell 4-1.

It's the first loss of the season for Jessup, moving them to 2-1-2 on the season.

"It was a tough one today with UC Merced," said head coach Greg Lazaga. "We had a hard time getting into a rhythm on the ball and forced ourselves into some tight corners that we took passive options on."

Jessup's lone goal came in the 58th minute when Diego Nunez found Alvaro Ascencio in front of the net for the second match in a row. Ascencio converted on the chance, netting his second goal of the season.

For Nunez, the assist is his third of the year. With four goals, Nunez also leads the GSAC in points (11).

"We responded in the second half with a 20-minute stretch of being dangerous," added Lazaga. "We almost got ourselves back into the game. We will stay grounded towards learning and progressing as a collective unit."

The Bobcats did a great job of keeping the ball in their attacking half, boxing in the Warriors to limit their possession and scoring opportunities. At halftime, Jessup has pieced together just two shots, with none going on goal.

Merced scored in the third minute of the match and then made it 2-0 with a goal in the 25th minute. Their third tally came two minutes before Ascencio's goal. The fourth and final strike came off a corner kick in the final ten minutes of play.

Jessup split time in goal on Monday. Nick Forry made his first collegiate start, playing over 59 minutes while recording three saves. One of the saves came on a point-blank opportunity for the Bobcats at the six-yard box.

Antonio Camacho appeared in the second half, playing a half hour while making one save.

The Warriors are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday against CSU Monterey Bay. The match is currently slated for 2 p.m.
