ROCKLIN, Calif. – Eight teams have entered Warrior Arena looking to knock off the Warriors since their last home loss, and eight teams have failed. On Thursday, looking to make it nine wins in a row on Horton Court, Jessup came out on the losing end, falling 92-85 to Westmont.
It was on Senior Day last season, against Westmont nonetheless, that Jessup last lost at home. The Warriors are now 6-1 on Horton Court this season.
Jessup's All-American point guard
Cashemin Williams led the Warriors in scoring, dropping 32 points in the losing effort. Williams connected on 12-of-19 from the floor, adding a trio of assists and rebounds to his stat line.
The scoring line is a historic one for Williams, as the penultimate basket of the night, a layup with 12 seconds to go, put him at 1,000 career points with the Warriors. He joins just Lucas Birchard and Keith Phillips as the three Warriors in the 1,000-point club.
Myles Corey closed with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
A lethal weapon for the Warriors in Thursday's battle was guard
Nigel McKay. Playing 18 minutes off the bench, McKay knocked down his first five attempts from three, finishing with 15 points on the night.
On McKay's shooting, head coach
Lance Von Vogt stated, "Nigel came in did a great job off the bench. We know that he's capable of nights like he showed tonight."
Westmont led big in this one, taking their largest lead of the evening with 10:59 to go at 19 points. But the Warriors of Jessup never seemed rattled, as they managed to cut away at Westmont's advantage and sneak within six with 90 seconds to go.
Time would not be on Jessup's side, as Westmont lived on the free-throw line for the final two minutes of regulation.
Westmont made 23-of-30 from the charity stripe, as Cly Griffith did the bulk of the damage with a 10-for-13 showing. Free throws are an area Jessup will look to sure up as they posted a 14-for-27 performance on their end.
"Of course free throws were, you know, a contributing factor," said Von Vogt. "It made it difficult to come back after we dug ourselves the hole not making free throws, after you know earning trips to the line. We're not going to be a great team like Westmont with the way that they were playing tonight. Unless we're playing at a higher level and then what we did defensively transition offensively and obviously from the free throw line."
Defensively, Jessup held Westmont without a field goal for the final 4:30 of regulation. But Westmont would win the rebounding battle 34-32, with 26 of those boards coming on the defensive end.
Jessup drops to 4-2 in conference with the loss, 10-6 overall. Westmont moves to .500 in the GSAC at 3-3.
The Warriors will look to regroup tomorrow as they get ready for a 1 p.m. tip against (RV) The Master's on Saturday.
