ATHERTON, Calif. – The GSAC's two Northern California schools met up on Thursday as the regular season winds down to its final weekend. Hoping to snap their winless streak and move up the GSAC table, Jessup surrendered a second-half goal in a 1-0 loss to the Menlo Oaks.
Jessup moves to 2-3-1 in conference action following the result. The Warriors have now lost two in a row and sit in fifth in the GSAC standings. The top six will qualify for the conference tournament.
Menlo improves their GSAC record to 6-0-1, guaranteeing them a first-round bye and the top seed in the GSAC Tournament, which will take place on their home turf in Atherton.
"I loved our competitiveness today," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "We gave ourselves opportunities. (
Elisha Burbridge) and (
Paolo Ionescu) both had good first-half looks. (
Isaac Morfin)'s second half attempt was a great look. We could be a little more composed on the final play. But lots of good play. We were just on the wrong side of a great shot off the post."
The only goal of Thursday's match came in the 64th minute of play when Menlo's Mattia Celant netted his third goal of the season. The shot was one of four on goal by the Oaks, as goalkeeper
Gerardo Perez Plata registered three saves.
Jessup would fire off four shots in the loss, two recording on frame.
The Warriors now shift their focus to the final match of the regular season, coming this Saturday when they host Hope International. Saturday will be Senior Day, as a pre-match ceremony will take place to honor the six Warriors who are departing at the end of the campaign.
