LINCOLN, Calif. – Rainy skies over Lincoln brought a shift to the schedule this week, as game one of Jessup's three-game set with OUAZ was moved to Thursday. On a day that started as a pitcher's duel, a late rally out of the visiting dugout ended Jessup's day with a 9-5 loss.
Getting the nod to start the series was right-hander
Trevor Arnston. Fresh off his best outing of the season last week in San Diego, Arnston got off to a slow start when he served up a solo shot to the lead-off hitter.
But Arnston quickly settled down, holding the Spirit to three runs on six hits, striking out five while walking two.
The Warriors quickly responded to OUAZ's early run with a first-inning home run of their own, this one coming from shortstop Brennan Rozell. An RBI single from Chris Cook quickly followed as the Warriors took a 2-1 lead through the first.
OUAZ knotted the game at one in the fifth, but the Jessup bats were ready to counter.
With things tied at two entering the sixth,
Kevin Gutierrez recorded a needed RBI single up the middle, driving in
Cody Antone from second. One batter later,
Kayde Iranon ended the day of OUAZ's start as he doubled off the wall in left-center, plating Gutierrez and Chris Lopez.
All seemed to be in the Warriors' favor, heading to the seventh, but then came the big inning for OUAZ. As Jessup went to the bullpen, the Spirit tagged
Caleb Markwith for three runs, putting the visitors ahead 6-5 entering the seventh-inning stretch.
The Spirit would add a pair in the eighth, followed by a run in the ninth, as the Warriors had no comeback bid in them. With a win, Jessup would've moved to .500. Now they sit 7-9 on the season.
Jessup and OUAZ were fortunate to get in nine innings on Thursday, as heavy rain has been hitting the Lincoln area. The two sides hope to get back on the field tomorrow, but that remains up in the air based on the weather.
