Jessup Drops Opener in Idaho 4-0 to SOU

The Warriors will stay in Idaho to take on No. 19 College of Idaho on Thursday; Jessup registered 14 shots to SOU’s 15

CALDWELL, Idaho – The 2023 season got underway on Tuesday, with the Warriors playing one of two matches in Idaho. Hitting the field first on a neutral site, Jessup took on the Raiders of Southern Oregon, resulting in a 4-0 loss that starts Jessup's campaign at 0-1.

Jessup, who entered the season on the heels of a 3-9-2 record in 2022, is in their second year under head coach Amsalu Fantahun. The roster features 13 new players as Fantahun brought in his first full recruiting class as head coach.

The Warriors fired off 14 shots, six on goal, in the loss. SOU registered just one more shot than Jessup, with eight going on goal.

Fantahun split his goalkeeping duties on Tuesday, turning to senior Madeline Jern for the first 77 minutes of play. Jern allowed four goals while recording three saves. Lilliana Fenn then played the final 13 minutes, registering one save in the process.

SOU netted their first goal in the 27th minute of play, coming off the foot of Malaika Quigley. Quigley was back at it with her second goal of the day in the 56th minute.

Iniana Hammond scored to make it a 2-0 lead for the Raiders in the 39th minute of the match. Sophia Connell assisted the goal. Brooklyn Hayes took an assist from Mia Ammons in the 71st minute for the fourth and final tally of the match.

Kye Johnson led the Warriors with six shots, four coming on goal. All-GSAC selection from the 2022 season Kaylee Gillespie registered three shots off the bench, one going on goal.

The Warriors will remain in Idaho for the rest of the week as they will hit the field again on Thursday against The College of Idaho. COI comes into the match ranked No. 19 in the nation. Thursday's match is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Jessup will compete at home for the first time on Tuesday, August 29, when they take on Simpson University. Tickets are on sale HERE.
