TACOMA, Wash. – Tennis season got underway on Friday as the Warriors took part in the first of two countable matches on their fall schedule. Hitting the courts in Tacoma, Jessup came away with two victories as the Warriors swept the day against the University of Puget Sound.
The first victory of the day was wrapped up in rather large fashion as the Jessup women won their bout 8-1.
Each match counted for a point in the contest, as opposed to the team taking the most wins in doubles, receiving just one point. That did not hurt the Warriors as they took two of three in doubles play, earning them two points.
Singles play then saw the Warriors sweep the board, taking all six matches. Those on the court for the Warriors included
Jessica Holbea (6-2, 7-5),
Nia Macay (6-1, 6-0), Sophia Serdinchenko (6-4, 6-2),
Annika Rojas (6-2, 6-2),
Danielle Akabane (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), and
Katlyn Perry (3-6, 6-0, 6-2).
The victories for Macay, Serdinchenko, Rojas, and Perry all come in their Jessup debuts.
The next contest to decide was the men's matchup, and this one came down to the wire. Ultimately, Jessup scored the victory with their 5-4 finish, moving the Warriors to 1-0 as they start year three of the program.
Jessup got two victories in doubles play, the first coming for the first position as the duo of
Austrebeto Carlon and
Isaac Graves won 8-2.
Henrique Levy teamed up with
Joan Garros in the third spot, winning their match 8-5.
Carlon (6-2, 6-1) and Graves (6-4, 6-2) would add singles victories as well. The other singles win for the Warriors came from
Tanner Sitanggang, who won his matchup in straight sets (7-5, 6-4).
The Warriors will be back on the courts tomorrow as they visit Willamette University in Salem, OR. Matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
