COSTA MESA, Calif. – Guard
Myles Corey entered Thursday night on the edge of history, as the fourth-year Warrior came into Jessup's contest four points away from matching an all-time mark. With his team leading the way to a 15-point win, Corey waited until the second half to move into the top slot on the program's scoring chart.
With his pair of free throws midway through the second half, Corey reached 1,375 career points, moving him past Lucas Birchard for the top spot on the all-time scoring chart. Corey was immediately pulled from the game after the record-breaking swish, as he was then mobbed by his team who began celebrating the accomplishment.
Corey began his Jessup tenure in 2020 under former Jessup head coach
Lance Von Vogt, and over a four-year career, he has become one of the best guards in the NAIA.
But it wasn't just Corey who found the bottom of the basket. His backcourt partner
Ty Artis also had a big day as he dropped 19 points on 7-of-13 from the floor.
Ja'Maris Blackmon finished behind him with 15 points while also connecting on seven field goals.
Aydan Janssan added another double-double to his season stat sheet as he totaled 12 points and 14 boards, 12 of which came in the opening half.
Emmett Holt contributed ten points off the bench.
It was once again a fast start for the Warriors, as Jessup opened up to a 15-8 lead over the Lions. Jessup scored the first bucket of the game 23 seconds into the contest and never relinquished it. Thursday's action saw the only tie come at 0-0, as the Warriors led for 39:37 of game time.
Jessup's largest lead of the night came at 4:43 remaining in regulation, when they led by 23.
The win moves the Warriors to 12-4 on the year as their GSAC record jumps to 3-0. Jessup also sees their win streak hit seven games.
It will be another tough test on the road for the Warriors when they hit the court on Saturday. Jessup will be in Fullerton, the same location where their season ended one year ago, as they are set to take on Hope International.
Saturday's contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
