HONOLULU, Hawaii – It was a late night for those on the mainland who stayed up to watch the Warriors take on Hawaii Pacific, as Wednesday's match went into Thursday morning (PST). The early hours were worth it, as a first-half goal proved to be the difference for Jessup in a 1-0 victory.
Jessup, led by head coach
Amsalu Fantahun, picked up their first victory as members of the PacWest. Their overall record improves to 3-6-2.
Goalkeeper
Lille Aimes is credited with her first collegiate victory in net. The freshman totaled five saves during a 90-minute shutout. In 200 minutes of action, Aimes has yet to concede a goal at the collegiate level.
All Jessup's defense needed was one goal, and that tally came midway through the first half.
The Warriors took advantage of a breakaway chance 25 minutes into the match to give themselves the 1-0 lead, as a timely placement on a second chance found the back of the net.
Abella Waterman took the first shot from the right side of the post, which was denied by HPU goalkeeper Justice Valdez, sending the ball toward the left side.
Luckily for Jessup, in that exact spot was
Angela Shannon, as she got her head on the ball to place it on frame.
Jessup would have a second chance at goal in the 39th minute, but a penalty kick from
Kaylee Gillespie sailed high.
Wednesday's match was not without its share of adversity on both sides. HPU went down to ten players 39 minutes in when a red card was issued, resulting in the penalty kick to Gillespie. Later in the 68th minute, the field was leveled when a decision was made to issue
Jenessa Cisneros a red card after a foul along the sideline.
Cisneros will have to miss Jessup's next match, barring an appeal to the conference office.
After two matches on Oahu, Jessup will island jump to the Big Island for a meeting with Hawaii Hilo on Saturday. The finale of the Hawaii trip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Warriors will be back home on Warrior Field when they welcome Westmont on October 19. Tickets are on sale
