HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Warriors said Aloha to Honolulu on Monday, as a week in Hawaii began with a match against the Silverswords of Chaminade. Hoping a trip across the Pacific would spark some offense, the Warriors again struggled to find the back of the net, as the 90-minute battle ended with neither team registering a goal.
Jessup is now 0-5-4 in their inaugural NCAA Division II campaign. Goals have been hard to come by for the Warriors, as they are averaging 0.44 goals per game through nine contests.
The Warriors' leading goal scorer on the season,
Jalen Scott, had two of Jessup's six looks on frame.
Tariq Alabi (2),
Eduardo Guillen, and
Diego Nunez also fired attempts that were denied by Chaminade goalkeeper Jonah Valmonte.
Opposing Valmonte was
Maxx Willard, as he went the distance for the seventh time this year. Willard finished with six saves, one shy of his season-high, as he lowered his goals-against average to 1.12 per game.
It was Willard's second shutout of the season as well.
Head coach
Greg Lazaga was complimentary of his team's defense after the match, noting, "Our defense was solid. The midfield played simple and we opened up the field to create plenty of chances. We just need to add the finishing in front of the net."
Jessup's offense has failed to score a goal now in three consecutive matches.
"We allowed a little too much transition and came up empty in front of the net," added Lazaga. "The opportunities are there; we just need to finish plays as we continue to develop."
Jessup controlled the momentum of the opening 45 minutes as they outshot Chaminade 9-2. The Warriors also had 12 corner kicks in the opening half. The Warriors also won the possession battle across all 90 minutes, 54-47, with 41 percent of Jessup's time with the ball coming in their attacking third.
Monday was the first of three matches for the Warriors this week in the Aloha State. Jessup is set to return to the field on Wednesday when they take on Hawaii Pacific at 7 p.m. (PST). The trip wraps up on Saturday when the Warriors jump to the big island for a meeting with Hawaii Hilo.
The Warriors will be back home on October 19 when they welcome Westmont to Rocklin.
