GLENDALE, Ariz. – For the first time this season, Jessup batted first on Friday as the Warriors took to Arizona for the first of three road games. With the GSAC season kicking off, the Warriors started on the wrong foot as a 14-4 loss handed them their first GSAC loss of the year.
Jessup drops to 10-2 on the season, as they started the year playing 11 straight games at McBean Park.
Right-hander
Anthony Perez walks away with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits over four innings of work. Perez punched out four Firestorm batters while surrendering three free passes.
Arizona Christian struck for three runs in the bottom of the third and then piled on two more in the fourth to push ahead 5-0. The big inning came in the fifth, as with Jessup now in the bullpen, ACU plated four more to go ahead 9-0.
Head coach
Trevor Paine turned to
Jason Riviello,
Mason Azevedo, and
Riley Houghtby for work out of the bullpen Friday night.
The Warriors got their first run of the game in the top of the sixth, as former Arizona Wildcat
Jack Grant returned to the Grand Canyon State with an RBI single, plating
Cody Antone.
Kayde Iranon drove in the second run of the inning with a one-out sacrifice fly.
Reigning GSAC Player of the Week,
Drew Andrews added his first RBI of the series in the seventh when he singled to center, driving in
Nate Van Patten. The eighth inning would see Antone score his second run of the game, this time via a
Cole Hazel RBI single.
ACU negated a shutdown inning in the last of the eighth due to their lead-off solo home run. They then added four more, giving them a ten run advantage.
The series will see both teams return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, as two more games will take place in Glendale. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m. (PST).
Jessup will be back home at McBean Park next weekend when they host Menlo College for three GSAC games. Fans can secure their tickets ahead of time
