No. 9 Jessup Splits Tuesday Series with Simpson

The Warriors plated a season-high 26 runs in game two; Jessup gets the weekend off after their series with Menlo was canceled

REDDING, Calif. – Jessup was back on the road Tuesday as they visited Simpson University in Redding for a doubleheader. A late comeback came up short in game one, but game two saw the Warriors score in abundance as the day ended with a weekday split.

The Warriors move to 26-6 on the season, as they now await a new national ranking as the NAIA releases the next coaches' poll on Wednesday morning.

Jessup pieced together a late comeback in game one, as they entered the ninth inning trailing 9-4. Dominic Ott started the rally with an RBI double, and then Bryce Petrilla pulled the Warriors within one on his three-run homer, but that would be all as Simpson took the game 9-8.

The hot bat of Trey Furrey stayed hot in game one as he went 4-for-4 at the dish with a home run and a double. Furrey followed it up with a 2-for-2 showing in the finale, as his batting average now sits at .519 on the season.

Right-hander Trevor Arnstone started game one and lasted 4.2 innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Jason Riviello, Evan Williams, and Preston Brook all saw time out of the bullpen.

Game two was a different story, as Jessup piled on run after run, as they took the finale 26-17. It's a new season-high in scoring for the Warriors, who now average 10 runs/game.

A Petrilla single got the Warriors on the board in the first but then came the big blast as Chris Lopez hit a three-run home run to make it 4-0. Jessup piled on five runs in the first, followed by eight in the second, as they led 13-0.

Simpson climbed back with eight unanswered, but then came another big inning when Jessup put up their second eight-run inning of the day in the sixth. The rally began with a Cody Antone home run and ended when Antone batted again, this time resulting in a three-run double.

Mason Azevedo earned his first win of the season after throwing the fourth inning. Starter Keola Yim lasted three innings, one shy of qualifying for the win in a seven-inning ballgame.

Ryan Stone, Xavier Maldonado, JJ Coates, and Nolan Thebiay saw time in relief.

With the split now complete, Jessup can now focus on rest and recovery for the next week and a half. The Warriors were scheduled to play three non-conference games with Menlo this weekend, but the series has now been canceled after the GSAC announced Menlo and Hope International would make up their conference series this weekend. The series was rained out earlier in the season.

Jessup will now be back in action on April 5 when they welcome Vanguard to McBean Park.
