Pitching Leads the Warriors to a Friday Sweep

Swartman and Moreno keep their perfect records alive; Jessup will honor ten seniors tomorrow before first pitch

LINCOLN, Calif. – With the chase for the GSAC Tournament heating up, the Warriors kicked off their final home GSAC series of the season on Friday as Vanguard came to town. Led by two strong outings from their starting pitchers and aided by the long ball, the No. 7 Warriors swept the day.

Jessup is now 28-6 on the season, and their record in GSAC games improves to 13-4. The Warriors remain one game behind Hope International for first place and a bye to start the conference tournament.

Game one saw head coach Trevor Paine hand the ball to right-hander Haliama Swartman. Swartman improved his record to 5-0 on the season after he allowed two runs on six hits across six innings of work. Swartman also struck out six.

The big shot in game one came off the bat of Kayde Iranon, as his three-run homer put the Warriors ahead 3-1 in the fourth. Cole Hazel later added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Closer Nolan Thebiay shut the door once again as he tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for his fifth save of the season.

From there, it was on to game two, as left-hander Max Moreno got the nod. Moreno dazzled again as he tossed six shutout frames before turning the ball to Jason Riviello for the final inning.

Moreno improved his record to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 4.24 on the season. The veteran lefty has held opponents scoreless in two of his last four starts, and the Warriors are 8-1 when Moreno pitches.

Jessup piled on the runs in the first inning, starting with RBI singles from Chris Lopez and Bryce Petrilla. A Jack Grant sacrifice fly made it 3-0, but then came the big blast as Iranon hit his second three-run homer of the day.

The Warriors would leave the yard again in the fourth on Lopez's solo blast.

Friday's sweep gives the Warriors three wins in a row, and their record at McBean Park improves to 24-2 on the season. The Warriors are two wins shy of matching the program record for most home wins, as the 2019 team won 26 times at McBean.

Jessup has four more chances to win at home, with the next two coming tomorrow.

Tomorrow's action will be Senior Day at McBean Park, as at 10:30 a.m., the Warriors will honor their ten graduating seniors. First pitch will take place at approximately 11:15 a.m.
