HAYWARD, Calif. – The final opportunity for select Warriors to punch their ticket to Indiana was Friday, as Jessup competed in the West Coast Last Chance Meet. It was a successful trip to the Bay Area, as another spot in the national championship field was secured.
With Friday being the final meet before nationals, head coach
Jeff Magley expressed his feelings on a season soon coming to an end. "It's always a little bit of a bittersweet time when it comes to the last regular season meet of the year. But that also means our national championship is right around that corner, and that is always exciting."
Sophomore
Erica Waseq ran a time of 14.40 in the women's 100m hurdles, hitting the A-Standard and securing a trip to Indiana. It will be Waseq's third career national championship appearance and second of the season, as she also qualified for the indoor meet earlier this year.
Waseq competed in the same event last year at her first NAIA National Championship appearance.
This makes it four Warriors who have secured a spot in Indiana. Joining Waseq will be
Julia Pisenti,
Jessica Pedretti, and
Paloma Baumert. Both Pisenti and Pedretti have qualified in multiple events.
Waseq and Baumert also competed in the 100m dash on Friday, with Waseq placing second and Baumert taking fourth. Baumert tuned up her performance in the pole vault by hitting the B-Standard for the second time this season.
Pisenti and Pedretti were in the field as well, as they competed in multiple throwing events in preparation for their appearance in the national championship. Pedretti has already qualified in three events, and Pisenti joined her in that accomplishment on Friday. By hitting the B-Standard in the javelin, the duo became the first Warriors to qualify for three events in the same season.
The men's field saw
Gianni Miles join the competition. Looking to punch his ticket in the 100m dash, Miles posted a time of 10.72 that just missed the B-Standard. Later, in the 200m, Miles achieved his goal, and his time of 21.28 sent him off to his first national championship.
Miles joins Pisenti as the two freshmen who will be competing on the national stage later this month.
The five Warriors who have secured a trip to Indiana will see the competition begin on May 22 from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marian, Ind. The three-day meet wraps up on Friday, May 24.
