Defensive Battle Ends in a Scoreless Draw

Willard posts seven saves in his first Jessup shutout; Jessup will host UC Merced on Tuesday afternoon

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Goalkeeper Maxx Willard posted his first shutout in a Jessup uniform on Thursday as the Warriors wrapped up a three-match road trip with a visit to San Francisco State. The match was dominated by defense on both ends, as a 90-minute battle ended in a scoreless draw.

The Warriors are now on their way back to Rocklin with a 0-1-2 record to start their Division II era. Jessup posted a 1-1 draw in their DII debut against Northwest Nazarene and then fell 2-0 on Saturday in the finale of their Colorado road trip.

"We put together a really good first half on both sides of the ball," said head coach Greg Lazaga after Wednesday's draw. "The opportunities were there for us."

The best of Jessup's five opportunities on goal came in the first half when they were awarded a penalty. Diego Nunez stepped up for the opportunity, but his chance hit the left post. It's the second missed penalty in three matches for the Warriors to start the season.

Nunez's attempt on goal came in the 30th minute.

The Warriors registered seven shots in the first half, followed by another seven in the second. SF State turned up the pressure with a 12-shot showing in the final 45 minutes of action, five of which went on frame, but no goals were to be found thanks to the strong showing of Willard in goal.

Willard posted seven saves in his 90-minute performance, giving him nine on the season.

"We lost some momentum to start the second half," added Lazaga. "But we had some opportunities to put the game away. I'm confident this group will continue to push towards making these close games a win."

Through three matches in their Division II era, the Warriors are being outscored 3-1, but now the season shifts to Rocklin and two consecutive matches at home.

The home schedule will begin on Tuesday, September 17, when the Warriors welcome UC Merced to Warrior Field. Cal Poly Humboldt will then come to town 48 hours later for the second match on the homestand.
