ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Jessup University men's soccer team suffered a challenging defeat against Dominican University (CA) at Warrior Field on Friday, 2-4 (1-8-3, 0-6 PacWest).
It was a tale of two halves at Warrior Field on Saturday as Jessup trailed 0-4 at the break, but bounced back and scored two goals in the second half to lose 2-4 to the Dominican Penguins.
"The second half players, I think they just kind of turned things around," Warriors coach Greg Lazaga said. "They had an opportunity and you can choose to tuck it in or fight back, work hard and continue to grow. I'm really proud of them for sticking to it in a moment where they had a choice and their choice was forward."
The Warriors were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute and Mateo Barth slotted it in the bottom corner for the first Jessup goal, 71:17. Junior Jordee Magana came on with seven minutes to play and made each second matter. After nearly scoring a goal a few minutes earlier, Magana found the back of the net with two seconds remaining off of an assist from Barth, 89:58.
"Jordee has hit two in a row now, it's two games where he has come through for a goal, so we're going to have to figure out a way to get him some more minutes," Lazaga said. "I'm proud of some of the guys that got him opportunities as well. He's picking the right spots, but guys like Zay (Isaiah Hernandez), guys like Mateo on the serve, really good stuff getting up and around and giving them an opportunity to shine."
The four Penguins goals in the first half came from Rolando Gonzalez at the 11:55 minute, Anthony Stainer in the 24:23 minute, Alejandro Suarez-Amaya in the 32:25 minute and Freddie Allen in the 41:10 minute. Dominican finished the match with 14 shots and nine on goal while Jessup totaled 21 shots with eight on target. Warriors goalkeeper Curtis Lynch finished with five saves while Colin Nestor had four and Nylmar Gonzalez De Leon had two for the Penguins.
There were three cautions in the match, all on the Warriors with Luis Cruz, Jonathan Juarez and Nicholas Hernandez each being booked.
Jessup will be back at home on Friday, October 24th when they host Fresno Pacific University. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
