COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Jessup University women's soccer (1-5-2, 0-2-2 PacWest) team suffered a tough road loss at Vanguard University on Saturday, 0-5.
The Warriors fought hard defensively, but ultimately could not fend off the aggressive Lions offensive. Vanguard scored early in the match with their first goal from Sydney Powell at the 4:50 mark, 0-1. Nearly ten minutes later, Rachel Penick doubled the lead at 16:06, 0-2. For the third and final goal of the first half, Kate Burns found the net at 18:12, 0-3
The second half saw the Lions find their rhythm, striking for two quick goals midway through the second half. Hailey Garvin scored at the 69:14 minute with an assist from Megan Charley, 0-4. Kaitly Currier finished the scoring effort for Vanguard at the 80:41 mark, 0-5.
Jessup struggled to generate consistent offense against the stiff Vanguard defense, managing four total shots in the contest. Mellanie Chernay started in net for the Warriors and played six minutes. Celeste Fernandez played the rest of the match in net with two saves. Head Coach Amsalu Fantahun commented on the matchup, "We lost to a strong team, but we know there are things we need to improve. We'll work hard and be ready for the next match."
The Warriors will remain in Southern California for one more match before returning home. Jessup next faces Concordia University in Irvine on Tuesday, October 7th. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM (PDT).
