Pitching Shines in Saturday Sweep of the Sunbirds

Swartman allows two hits over 6.1 shutout innings; Andrews hit his fourth home run in the last three games

LINCOLN, Calif. – It was a historic day at McBean Park as the Warriors welcomed Fresno Pacific to town for the first two PacWest games in program history. On a day dominated by pitching, the Warriors brought out the brooms as they swept the series-opening doubleheader.

Jessup is now 5-0 to start the season, with all five victories coming against Division II competition.

Right-hander Hailama Swartman got the ball in game one, and in typical ace fashion, he controlled the game for the entire time head coach Trevor Paine stuck with him on the mound. Swartman logged 6.1 innings, during which he kept the Sunbirds off the scoreboard, limiting them to just two hits.

In two starts, Swartman has a 0.87 ERA across 10.1 innings of work.

After Swartman, Paine went to left-hander Tyler Lamperti out of the bullpen. Lamperti threw 1.2 hitless innings in relief, setting up Nolan Thebiay to shut the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Lamperti has yet to allow a hit in 6.1 innings of work.

Jessup got their first run of the day on a designed play on the base path, as a successful double steal saw Jack Grant take second and Kayde Iranon trot home on the throw. The second run came on a solo blast from Drew Andrews, his fourth home run in the last three games.

On to game two, it was Diego Chavez who got the nod from Paine. After an unearned run scored in the top of the first, Chavez proceeded to keep the Sunbirds off the scoreboard for the next five innings as he picked up the win thanks to his six strong innings. Chavez allowed five hits, struck out two, and walked none.

Joey Miller picked up the save with a scoreless seventh, as the Jessup pitching staff combined for no earned runs against them on the day.

Andrews drove in the first run on a sac fly in the third, and then Jessup took the lead in the fourth after three consecutive hit batsmen led to a run coming in. Cole Hazel was the beneficiary of the final HBP, as he picked up the RBI. Hazel later added an RBI in the sixth on a double that plated Dominic Ott, who had picked up an RBI of his own on a single to plate Nick Poss.

The series with the Sunbirds will continue on Monday as the location flips to Dan Martin Stadium in Fresno. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
