LA MIRADA, Calif. – There will be no perfect season for Jessup Baseball, as a split on Friday to start a four-game set with Biola put a one in the loss column. A win in game one extended Jessup's win streak to eight, but following game two's loss, they will enter Saturday with eyes on at worst a series split.
Catcher
Nick Poss had the big bat in game one, finishing 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and extra-base hits. Poss put the Warriors on the board in the second inning with a two-run home run to left field and later added a double.
An error and a walk added to Jessup's early lead, and after a solo homer for Biola,
Jack Grant for the run back and then some with a two-run single in the fifth. The Warriors tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth thanks to an RBI single from
Rudy Rodriguez and a
Gabe Harris sac fly, sending the game into the ninth with the Warriors on top, 8-4.
Right-hander
Hailama Swartman moved to 2-0 with the game-one win, following a five-inning performance in which he allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
After Biola posted two runs on right-hander
Nolan Thebiay in the ninth, head coach
Trevor Paine looked to
Joey Miller to close the door. Miller answered the call as he collected his third save of the season.
Game two was a different story. A much different story, in fact.
Biola posted three runs in the second and followed that up with eight in the third. The big inning came when they posted 13 in the sixth, as the Eagles handed Jessup a 25-4 defeat.
Jessup collected two extra-base hits in the loss, an RBI double from Harris and a triple from
Tony Otis.
The Warriors used a collaborative effort of seven pitchers in the loss. The game saw the collegiate debuts of
Ryan Irvine and
Micah Marquez, as well as the first appearance by catcher
Landon Weiss on the mound. Weiss now has a career 0.00 ERA.
Jessup and Biola will return to the diamond on Saturday for two more games, as the series will be decided, beginning with game one's 11 a.m. first pitch. Both games will be streamed live on the
PacWest Network.
