Gators Sweep Jessup to end the Weekend

Jessup ends the weekend 2-2 after sweeping Sonoma State yesterday; The Warriors head to Turlock for five games next week

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After sweeping Sonoma State on Friday, the Warriors got back to work Saturday afternoon against the Gators of San Francisco State. The day was a flip of Friday's outcome, as the Warriors leave San Francisco on the receiving end of a two-game sweep.

Now 3-3 on the season, the Warriors will return to work in one week at Stanislaus State's Tournament of Champions.

"After a doubleheader weekend, we are grateful for the opportunity to play and grow," said head coach Brie Campbell. "We were able to make adjustments after game one but struggled in areas of defense against a strong team."

Game one resulted in a 4-0 loss for Jessup. The Gators plated two runs in the third and followed it up with two insurance runs in the fifth. Jessup's best look at scoring came in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two outs, but a ground out ended the potential rally.

Alexandria Himes leaves San Francisco with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits across five innings. Jazlyn Villavicencio tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

The second game was a different story for the Jessup offense, as the bats came to life in the second with a three-run outburst. The Warriors added to it in the fourth, plating four runs. Two came home on a Sarah Giles double down the right field line, and then Giles scored on Maddy Ybarra's single to center.

A run in the top of the sixth added to Jessup's lead, sending them into the bottom half leading 8-5.

The Gators mounted their comeback with two runs in the sixth and then on the game with two runs in the seventh, as the winning run scored on a single to right field.

"This part of the year is the time we work on what we need to in order to compete at a high level as the season progresses," added Campbell. "We'll push reset this next week and keep pushing as we're in it for the marathon season ahead, and I have all the confidence in this team they will grow from the opportunity to grow today."

Villavicencio takes the loss in game two. Bella MacFarlane logged six innings and left with no decision.

Jessup will be back on the field in six days as one of 39 games in the Tournament of Champions. The Warriors will play five times across three days, beginning with Central Washington on February 14.
