LINCOLN, Calif. – Wednesday's series with Chaminade saw an early exit for the paying audience as another program first occurred at McBean Park. With a ten-run advantage after seven innings, Wednesday's game was stopped, as Chaminade declared victory via the run rule.
Â
The 11-1 final marks the first time in program history that a game was called early due to the scoreline. The run rule was not in effect during Jessup's ten seasons at the NAIA level. To invoke the rule, a team must lead by ten runs after the seventh inning.
Â
Jessup managed one run in the loss, which came off the bat of
Cole Hazel, who hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. It was Hazel's second long ball of the season. The blast made it a 10-1 game at the time.
Â
Â
Chaminade provided the difference in the game in the form of Safea Villaruz-Mauai. Villaruz-Mauai went 3-for-3 with two solo home runs, an RBI single, and an intentional walk. When the Warriors walked Villaruz-Mauai in the fifth, setting up a double play scenario, Alex Greb made the Warriors pay with a three-run home run to left-center.
Â
Aydan Lobetos added the Silverswords' fourth home run of the day, a two-run blast to cap off an eight-run fifth inning.
Â
Left-hander
Tyler Lamperti was handed his first loss of the season, moving him to 2-1. Lamperti allowed three runs on six hits across four innings of work.
Tyler Moore,
Caleb Markwith, and
Jason Riviello combined for the final three innings on the mound.
Â
Wednesday's loss drops Jessup to 17-7 in PacWest action. The Warriors do walk away with a series victory, their fifth of the season.
Â
Jessup will be back in action this weekend as the No. 4 ranked Warriors of Westmont College come to town. This will be Jessup's first meeting with Westmont as a member of the PacWest. The two last played in April of 2023, with Jessup splitting the series against a Westmont club that went on to win the NAIA World Series.
Â
Both doubleheaders this weekend are scheduled for 1 p.m. first pitches.
