Softball Splits to Begin Series in Azusa

Giles hit her tenth home run of the season; Jessup enters the series finale 11-6 in PacWest games

AZUSA, Calif. – Following a break from the PacWest on Tuesday, the Warriors returned to their regularly scheduled programming on Friday with day one of two days in Azusa. A comeback victory opened Friday in Southern California, but it was the hosting Cougars who had the last laugh and forced a Friday split.

The Warriors are now 19-15 overall in their first Division II season, with their record in PacWest games sitting at 11-6.

Jessup found themselves in an early hole in game one as the Cougars put the first two runs on the board. Jessup would put a one on the visitors' side of the scoreboard with Kylie Nunes' RBI double in the fourth. An inning later, Jessup took the lead and never looked back.

For the tenth time this season, senior Sarah Giles hit a home run, with Friday's game one blast being a three-run shot in the fifth to put Jessup ahead 4-2. The Warriors got some late-inning insurance runs to combat the late scoring of APU as Jessup held on in the opener to win 6-4.

Right-hander Alexandria Himes earned the win in the opener, improving her mark to 6-7 in her first Jessup season.

Game two was a different script as this time the Cougars were the ones to grab the win as a 7-4 final concluded a split.

Giles again powered the Jessup offense as she drove in a run with her fifth-inning double. Another RBI double would come off the bat of Maddy Ybarra, with her hit driving in Jessup's final run of the day in the top of the seventh.

Junior Bella MacFarlane was tabbed with the loss, moving her to 9-4 on the season

The Warriors and Cougars will return to the diamond tomorrow for the second doubleheader of the series. Saturday's series ending double-dip is slated to begin at noon and can be viewed HERE.
