Softball Sends Off Seniors with Sweep of Academy of Art

Ybarra homered and doubled in game one; Giles hit her 40th home run with the Warriors

LINCOLN, Calif. – The inaugural Division II regular season in Jessup Softball history came to a close on Saturday, with the Warriors honoring their seniors before a doubleheader. The senior class got the sendoff they deserved as Jessup swept Academy of Art in the final meeting between the two schools.

Jessup ends the regular season with a record of 32-21. Their mark in PacWest play finishes at 24-12, placing them third in the standings. Academy of Art still has four games remaining, but with the university announcing they will cancel athletics at the end of the year, Saturday marks the final meeting between the two schools.

A six-run second inning did the bulk of the damage for the Warriors in game one, but it came after Maddy Ybarra started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Ybarra added a ground-rule double in the second and later scored on a home run from Sarah Giles.

Giles' blast was the 40th of her career with the Warriors.

Jessup scored three more in the fourth as the game came to an end after the fifth with the Warriors on top, 11-1.

Alexandria Himes picked up her 11th win of the season with her five-inning performance.

The second game was more of a pitcher's dual as it took Jessup until the fifth to put a run on the board. That run came on a Madisyn Leffle double that plated Hannah Aguilar. Giles gave the Warriors their second run in the sixth with an RBI single.

Jessup took game two, 2-1.

Bella MacFarlane tossed a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits. She is 14-7 on the season.

Saturday began with the annual Senior Day festivities. The Warriors said goodbye to eight seniors who all played their final games at Foskett. All eight seniors were in the starting lineup for game one.

The season is not done for those seniors as Jessup will compete in the NCCAA Softball World Series which begins on May 19 from Grapevine, TX.
