SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A one-day break from the PacWest popped up on the schedule for Tuesday as the Warriors crossed the Bay Bridge for a meeting with San Francisco State. In the first and last meeting between the Warriors and Gators, SF State got the best of Jessup as the day resulted in a 9-6 defeat.
Â
SFSU announced earlier this year that their baseball program would disband at the end of the season. Tuesday's meeting at Maloney Field was the first time the two programs had squared off.
Â
Jessup used the non-conference break as a chance to give their pitching staff some work. Head coach
Trevor Paine turned to a new pitcher in every inning.
Â
The arms used were
Hailama Swartman,
Eric Vasser,
Diego Chavez,
Loren Iwata,
Evan Williams,
Tyler Lamperti,
Ryan Stone, and
Jake Morell. The bulk of the Gators' damage came with three runs off Vasser in the second and four off Williams in the fifth.
Â
Jessup tacked on their first run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from
Cole Anderson that plated
Cole Hazel. The Warriors entered the fifth without a base hit, and Hazel took that zero off the board with a single to the opposite field.
Â
The offense returned in the eighth thanks to a string of back-to-back-to-back doubles. The extra-base-hit parade saw consecutive doubles from the top of the order, and
Cody Antone,
Tony Otis, and
Rudy Rodriguez helped put four runs on the board.
Â
Â
Jack Grant added a fifth run in the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Â
Jessup ended the game with eight hits. Hazel went 2-for-3 and Antone finished 2-for-5.
Â
Tuesday's loss moves the Warriors to 30-16 on the season. They are 3-3 in non-conference games.
Â
Four games remain in Jessup's first Division II regular season, and those will come next week when the Warriors visit Point Loma in San Diego. The four-game series begins at noon on May 1.
Â
Jessup will also compete in the NCCAA World Series, which begins on May 17 in Kansas City.
