SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The scenic views of Point Loma's Carrol B. Land Stadium set the stage for the final series of the regular season. Taking on the No. 21 ranked Sea Lions of Point Loma, day one of the series ended in a split on a day where nine balls sailed into the coastline.
Jessup sits at 28-14 in PacWest action with the split. The Warriors' victory on Wednesday secured a regular-season championship for Westmont, who entered the day with their magic number sitting at one.
The Warriors were the first on the board in the opener thanks to a third-inning, opposite-field solo shot by
Drew Andrews. The 1-0 lead was short-lived as PLNU launched back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Cole Hazel leveled the score at two with an RBI single in the fourth, but back came the Sea Lions with three runs over the next two innings to pull ahead, 5-2.
Jessup cut back into the game in the sixth with their second opposite-field shot of the game, this one a two-run blast off the bat of
Dominic Ott.
Tony Otis joined the opposite field part with a two-run blast in the seventh that placed Jessup on top, 6-5. The rally continued with a
Rudy Rodriguez single to plate Ott.
Nick Poss added an insurance run in the eighth to give the Warriors an 8-5 advantage.
The bullpen held the lead for the Warriors as they combined for five shutout innings.
Evan Williams picked up his fifth victory of the season thanks to 3.2 innings in relief of
Hailama Swartman.
Jake Morell tossed a scoreless inning but was pulled with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth. Right-hander
Nolan Thebiay was called on to record the final out, and he did just that as a strikeout to secure his eighth save of the season.
Head coach
Trevor Paine turned the ball to
Diego Chavez in game two.
Chavez logged five innings in the outing, but he allowed five runs (four earned) across five hits during that time. Point Loma hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to start the scoring and they added additional runs in the second and fourth.
Tyler Moore also pitched, allowing one run in his one inning.
The Warriors' only run in a 6-1 game-two loss came in the sixth when Ott hit his second home run of the day, again an opposite-field shot. The Sea Lions got the run back with a solo blast in the bottom half.
Jessup was held to three hits in game two, with their first coming five innings into the game.
The finale of the series and the regular season will come on Friday as the Warriors and Sea Lions return to the diamond for two more games. With a Friday sweep, Jessup will finish tied with Point Loma for second place in the PacWest.
Friday's first pitch is scheduled for noon.
