HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Jessup University women's volleyball team (3-12, 1-6 PacWest) opened strong but could not hold on, dropping a 3-1 decision to Chaminade (9-8, 3-4 PacWest) Thursday night at McCabe Gym. The Warriors won the first set 25-18 before the Silverswords took the next three, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19, in front of 205 fans.
Jessup came out sharp in the opener, hitting .375 with 16 kills and just four errors on 32 swings. The second set swung the other way. Chaminade took the lead early and never gave it up, with no ties and no lead changes. Jessup's hitting dropped to .077 as the Warriors committed six errors. The third set was the tightest, with 10 ties and five lead changes, but Jessup hit a team-worst -.091 with seven errors, and Chaminade pulled away late. The Silverswords hit .333 in the fourth, and Jessup finished with a .235 mark on 12 kills.
For the match, Jessup hit .165 with 42 kills and 21 errors on 127 attempts. Chaminade hit .224 with 54 kills and 22 errors on 143 attempts. The biggest gaps came at the service line and the net. Chaminade served 10 aces to Jessup's three, though the Silverswords also had 15 service errors to Jessup's seven. At the net, Chaminade totaled 11 blocks (three solo, 16 assisted), compared with Jessup's five (10 assisted).
Junior outside hitter
Jenna Kraft led the Warriors with 13 kills and a team-best .276 hitting percentage. She added two block assists and finished with 14 points.
Jadyn Hoffman contributed 10 kills and eight digs while hitting .200.
Mia Rivera chipped in six kills, six digs and an ace for eight points. Mckinley King was the most efficient attacker, hitting .500 with six kills on 10 swings in three sets. She also added an ace and a block assist for 7.5 points.
Setter Kjersti Jacobson ran the offense with 36 assists and led the team with 17 digs. Libero Lillian Smith was right behind with 12 digs, and
Jayden Jones added eight. Jessup out-dug Chaminade 60-55 overall, but that effort was not enough to offset the Silverswords' serving pressure.
Chaminade was led by Tabby Allen, who hit .333 with 15 kills and 16.5 points, and Lillie Hinton, who added 14 kills. Reina Krueger posted 12.5 points, with six kills, three aces and six blocks.
Jessup's next stop is a trip to the Big Island for a PacWest match against Hawaii Hilo. The Warriors play at Vulcan Gymnasium on October 3 at 9:00 p.m. The team returns home to Warrior Arena on Oct. 20 to host Hawaii Pacific. Hawaii Hilo visits Rocklin two days later, on Oct. 22.
