Warriors Battle Early but Fall to Hawaii Hilo in Straight Sets

Jessup stays competitive in the second set and holds the Vulcans to a .227 hitting percentage, but 11 aces and a 40-22 edge in kills prove the difference in a 3-0 PacWest loss

HILO, Hawaii – The Jessup women's volleyball team fell to Hawaii Hilo 25-19, 25-19, 25-11 on Saturday night at Vulcan Gymnasium in front of 711 fans. The Warriors fall to 3-13 overall and 1-7 in PacWest play. The Vulcans improve to 13-5 and 5-2 in the conference. The match closed a three-match road trip through Hawaii for the Warriors, who defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-1 on Wednesday for their first conference win.

Hilo's serving was the difference. The Vulcans finished with 11 service aces, four each from Maiah Kalima and Anolani Santos, to Jessup's one, and the Warriors committed 11 reception errors. Hilo also outhit Jessup .227 to .023, outscoring the Warriors 40 kills to 22 while committing only 18 attack errors to Jessup's 20. 

The Warriors struggled to find their rhythm in the opening set, hitting -.028 with nine kills and nine errors on 36 attempts. Hilo, which recorded 12 kills and hit .079, pulled away for a 25-19 win. Jessup came out with more energy in the second set, hitting .250 with nine kills and only two errors on 28 attempts. The set featured eight ties and five lead changes, but Hilo hit .344 with 16 kills and closed it out 25-19. The Vulcans took control from the start of the third set, which featured no ties or lead changes, and ran away with a 25-11 win. 

Jenna Kraft led the Warriors with eight kills and 10 digs, and also added a block assist, finishing with 8.5 points. Mckinley King had four kills, five digs and two blocks, Jadyn Hoffman added four kills, and August Stys hit .600 with three kills and two blocks in limited attempts. Mia Rivera added three kills and three block assists. Kjersti Jacobson ran the offense with 14 assists and eight digs, and Lillian Smith added three assists, five digs and an ace. Jayden Jones led the back row with six digs. As a team, Jessup recorded 36 digs and 10 block assists, and the Warriors were close to Hilo's marks in both categories, with the Vulcans posting 40 digs and 11 blocks (one solo and 10 assists). Nakagawa led all players with 12 digs.
