SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Jessup men's soccer team kept Westmont off the scoreboard for 52 minutes on Saturday, but the hosts scored three times in the second half to take a 3-0 PacWest victory at Thorrington Field. Jessup falls to 2-6-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Westmont improves to 3-5-4 overall and 1-1-1 in the PacWest.
The Warriors started the match on the front foot.
Jordee Magana put the first shot of the game on target in the fourth minute, firing toward the bottom center of the goal, and Westmont goalkeeper Aidan Strickler saved it. Magana tested Strickler again less than 30 seconds later with a bottom-right attempt that was also saved, and he forced a third save in the 18th minute.
Brandon Acevedo,
Diego Bravo and Magana added more attempts as the half went on. Westmont created chances of its own, and goalkeeper
Eduardo Enriquez made saves on shots from Leonel Olivo Ortiz, Cole Lomeli and Logan Race. At halftime the teams were level at 0-0, with Westmont leading shots 8-6 and each side recording three saves. Westmont had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, and Jessup was whistled for only three fouls.
Westmont took control in the second half. Cash Anderholt broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with a goal assisted by Julius Oehmichen. The hosts then kept pushing, outshooting the Warriors 9-4 in the half and earning seven more corner kicks. Enriquez made two more saves, including a stop on Oehmichen in the 60th minute and another on Lomeli in the 71st. Olivo Ortiz doubled the lead in the 77th minute, and Cooper Mathews finished off an Anderholt assist in the 80th minute for the final margin.
Westmont finished with a 17-10 edge in shots and a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Warriors put three of their 10 shots on target, all of them from Magana, who led the team with four shots in 76 minutes. Bravo added two shots, while
Anthony Gambe,
Mathew Daniel, Acevedo and
Brady Lau each had one. Enriquez played all 90 minutes and finished with five saves. Westmont put eight shots on target.
"Tough second half for us. I think the first goal took some of the spirit out of us," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "But we have some quality guys. I believe they will turn the corner and soon. Pacwest is tough so no gimme games. Need to keep working for results."
The Warriors return to Rocklin for their PacWest home opener against Point Loma Nazarene on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 3:30 p.m.
