ROCKLIN, Calif. - Through 85 minutes of Thursday's men's soccer match between Jessup and Point Loma, it looked like the Warriors would be the team to emerge victorious. That all changed in the 86th minute when the visiting Sea Lions scored two goals en route to winning 3-2, their sixth victory of the season.
Despite a combined 12 shots by both teams in the first 45 minutes, it was a stalemate at halftime. The Sea Lions changed that immediately in the second half as Zack Mercieca scored his third goal of the season. Jessup answered right back less than six minutes later as
Brian Ramirez found the back of the net off of a beautiful ball from
Jordee Magana. The Warriors would proceed to take the lead in the 76th minute as
Diego Bravo scored his first goal of the year with an assist from
Hector Huerta.
Point Loma controlled 60% of the possession in the contest and continued getting guys forward in the late stages of the second half. This led to James Haynes scoring from an assist by Cole Friesen to level the score 2-2. Less than a minute later, a penalty was called and Jack Merrill slotted it home for his fifth goal of the season. The Sea Lions had eight shots in the second half compared to just five for Jessup. For the Warriors, Huerta had two shots on target while Ramirez, Bravo, Magana, Gavin Shin and
Kamden Sims each had a shot on frame.
Gonzalo Gurrola made five saves for Point Loma while
Curtis Lynch, who played the first half, made one save for Jessup.
There were five cautions in the contest, three for the Warriors including
Jesus Rios,
Jonathan Juarez and
Eduardo Enriquez. Owen Riecke and Evan Youngflesh received yellow cards for Point Loma.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday as they look for their third win against Biola. Game time is currently scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with senior day festivities taking place prior to the match.
