LINCOLN, Calif. — A Saturday doubleheader between the Jessup Warriors and the Vanguard Lions ended in a series split. While Vanguard took game one in a narrow 4-2 contest, Jessup bounced back in game two, capitalizing on offensive opportunities to win 7-3 and split the series.
Brie Campbell, now in her seventh season as head coach for the Warriors, reflected on the split: "We were able to get the series split, but in a competitive conference and season like this, we have to be better with our in-game adjustments."
The Lions struck first with a three-run opening inning. Jessup responded quickly in the bottom of the frame; Maddy Ybarra (2-for-3) drove in Rebecca Beasley (2-for-4) with an RBI single, followed by an Aaliyah Tinoco triple that brought Ybarra home.
With the Warriors trailing by only one run, the Lions added an insurance run in the top of the fourth. Jessup was unable to close the gap further, resulting in a 4-2 loss.
"We talk about our potential all the time, but potential doesn't win games—competing does," Coach Campbell added. "We need to be a team that is better in the fourth inning than we were in the first. If we aren't adjusting our eyes, our feet, and our mindset with every at-bat, we're leaving wins on the table. It's time to stop playing 'well' and start playing to the standard we've set for ourselves."
The Warriors found their rhythm in game two with a powerful offensive display. Jessup jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning, sparked by a sacrifice fly from Ybarra and capped by a three-run home run from Evangelina Chavarria.
The SoCal visitors managed to scrap together two runs to cut into the lead, but Neva Adams extended the Warriors' cushion in the fourth inning with an RBI double down the right-field line. Jessup added two more runs in the sixth to bring their total to seven. On the mound, Nohemi Livingston tossed another complete game, punctuating the victory by striking out the final batter.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the team continue to get better with each series and find more consistency with each opportunity," Campbell concluded.
The Warriors now head to the Bay Area for a conference doubleheader against the Menlo College Oaks. First pitch is scheduled for March 20th at 12:00 PM, with game two following at 2:30 PM.
