ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Jessup women's tennis hit the home courts at Johnson Ranch Sports Club North for a Sunday doubleheader, splitting the day's action with a gritty 4-3 comeback victory over Chaminade University before falling 7-0 to California Lutheran University squad.
Game 1: Jessup 4, Chaminade 3
The morning matchup against the Silverswords proved to be a thriller. The Warriors faced an early uphill battle, conceding wins by forfeit at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots due to a short-handed lineup.
Despite the deficit, Jessup came out swinging. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Briana Smith and Giselli Reschke delivered a flawless performance, sweeping their Chaminade opponents 6-0. However, Chaminade claimed the No. 2 doubles match to secure the opening doubles point.
Trailing heading into singles play, the Warriors caught fire and took four of the five contested courts to clinch the overall match. Briana Smith set the tone at No. 1 singles with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory.
The middle of the lineup proved to be the difference-maker for Jessup. At No. 3, Rylie Maloney cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win. Danielle Akabane followed suit at No. 4 singles, dispatching her opponent 6-1, 6-4, while Maria Antonella Cardenas secured a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5 to seal the 4-3 team victory for the Warriors.
Game 2: Jessup 0, California Lutheran 7
With a quick turnaround for the afternoon slate, the Warriors faced a formidable Regals team (6-1) that controlled the momentum from start to finish.
California Lutheran swept the doubles matches, taking the No. 1 spot 5-2 over Smith and Reschke, and the No. 2 spot 6-1 over Maloney and Cardenas.
In singles action, the Regals showcased their depth. CLU secured straight-set victories across all five contested courts. Giselli Reschke battled hard at No. 2 singles but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-3, while Maloney dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 3.
The Warriors will look to build on the momentum of their morning victory as they host Weber State on March 27th.Â
