ROCKLIN, Calif. - On a momentous Friday evening at Warrior Arena, the Jessup University Men's Volleyball team put together a commanding performance, sweeping the UC Merced Bobcats (4-18, 1-13 MPSF) in straight sets to celebrate Senior Night in style, 3-0 (25-15, 30-28, 25-19).
Building off the momentum of their four-set road win against UC Merced just two days prior, the Warriors came out swinging in front of an energized home crowd. Jessup set the tone early in the first frame, cruising to a comfortable 25-15 win behind a clean offensive attack and aggressive serving that kept the Bobcats out of system.
However, the real test of the night came in a marathon second set. UC Merced refused to go down quietly, battling point-for-point to push the frame well past the standard 25-point threshold. In a test of nerves and endurance, Jessup eventually broke the deadlock, leaning on timely kills and rock-solid defense to edge the Bobcats out 30-28 and take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Warriors carried that hard-earned momentum into the third set, putting the match away with a 25-19 final frame. At the forefront of the Warriors' offense was the dynamic duo of Jan Lopuch and Jonas Müller, who tallied 10 kills each. Lopuch was virtually unstoppable from the service line, dealing out a devastating 5 aces to go along with his 3 digs. Müller put together a superb all-around performance of his own, adding 6 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace. Chase Schwab and Clement Osahon Jr. also chipped in with 4 kills apiece, with Schwab registering a team-high .667 hitting percentage and pair of blocks.
The Jessup attack was smoothly orchestrated by a two-setter system, with Riley Green dishing out a team-high 15 assists and Colin Marks closely following with 14. Defensively, libero Logan Marks patrolled the backcourt flawlessly, leading all players with 9 digs to stymie the Bobcats' hitters.
Following the dominant sweep, Head Coach Kyle Steele reflected on the emotional weight of the evening and the unique opportunity to let his veteran players shine right out of the gate.
"It was amazing to get all the seniors in and for them to stay in the entire set one to get the win," Steele said. "All of the effort, blood, sweat, and tears those guys have put in over the last year or two, it was great to see it come full circle. Super proud of the team tonight and it's great to honor the seniors."
It was a picture-perfect ending for Jessup's graduating class, defending their home floor and sweeping a conference rival to close out the week. The team now shifts their focus on the MPSF postseason as they head to Provo, Utah. Jessup will compete on Wednesday, April 22nd with the opponent and time to be announced.
