ROCKLIN, Calif. – Dominican (CA) scored three times in the first 21 minutes and held on for a 5-1 win over the Jessup women's soccer team Saturday at Warrior Field. The Warriors (0-5-2) responded with a stronger second half, getting a goal from
Karlee Lywandowsky and keeping Dominican (5-3-1) off the board over the final 33 minutes.
Dominican set the tone early. Brisa Navarrete scored in the 9th minute off a Janae Schwan assist, and Lyric Gomez-Muniz doubled the lead in the 18th on a Carson Warfield feed. Schwan then scored in the 21st minute, assisted by Guilianna McCarty, to make it 3-0. The Penguins outshot Jessup 5-2 in the opening half and put two of their shots on goal. Jessup's chances came from
Gracyn Wilkinson, whose shot in the 8th minute was saved by Dominican keeper Rylee Buesing, and
Kaylee Fore, whose attempt in the 39th minute was also saved. Jessup went to the break trailing 3-0 and was called for six fouls in the half, against three for Dominican.
The Warriors tightened up after halftime. Dominican added two more goals, from Riley Gergurich in the 50th minute and Warfield in the 57th, but Jessup then settled in and did not concede again. Goalkeeper
Tyler Boren played the first hald and
Avery Suhr played the second half and made two saves in the second half, stopping Bailey Nadell in the 73rd minute and McCarty in the 82nd. Defenders
Roxanna Medina,
Angelina Mitchell and
Piper Hansen each played the full 90 minutes. Dominican managed six shots in the second half, but Jessup cut its foul total from six to five and kept the Penguins to one corner kick.
Jessup's lone goal came in the 74th minute. Lywandowsky, a substitute who entered in the first half, scored to make it 5-1. She finished with one shot, and it went in. Hansen followed with a shot that went wide left in the 80th minute. The Warriors matched Dominican's shot total at two apiece in the second half, finishing 4-11 overall, with three of their four shots on target.
Jessup returns to Warrior Field next Saturday, Sept. 26, to host UC Santa Cruz at noon, a game that will stream on PacWest Network. The Warriors then open conference play Oct. 3 at Westmont. They'll see Dominican again Oct. 31 in San Rafael.
