Jessup Volleyball Unable to Fight Off Eagles’ Finish

Box Score The William Jessup women's volleyball team competed in their first of three matches this afternoon in Lancaster, Calif. for the University of Antelope Valley Courage Classic.

The first face off was against the Emry Riddle Eagles where the Warriors came out strong taking the first set, but were unable to pull out another win losing by just two points each game (25-14, 23-25, 28-30, 23-25).

"Today provided many learning opportunities for us as our young team learns how to play together," head coach Shasta Millhollin reflected.

It was a speedy first set for the Warriors as they came out strong attacking at the net and defending with an all-out attitude.  But with an early trail in the second set, the Eagles were able to hang on to the win, evening up the match at a game each.

The third set was one to watch as each team took their turn in taking the lead, and then making a comeback.  The Warriors went up 23-21 when the Eagles rose to the occasion always staying within one point to force another serve from either team.  It wasn't until a knotted 28 game where they were able to take the 29-28 lead and finish the set with a two-point advantage.

In the sink-or-swim set for the Warriors, a familiar affair continued as the Eagles and Warriors exchanged leads each competing for what could be the final set or pushing it to the fifth for Jessup's advantage. But with late errors, the Warriors were unable to seal the deal falling to Emry Riddle 3-1.

"We were in the match every step of the way against a strong Embry Riddle team," said Millhollin.  "Ultimately, our forced errors got the best of us."

The Warriors will take the court tomorrow continuing their competition at the Courage Classic first taking on Benedict University (AZ) at 12:30 p.m. followed by the host team, University of Antelope Valley at 7 p.m.
