ROCKLIN, Calif.— After handling multiple cancelations, women's basketball is faced with the task of being true road Warriors as they approach five games over six days. Jessup's busy week starts with three games in a row, beginning in Riverside against Cal Baptist, which will be followed by a trip to Utah to play Southern Utah and Utah Valley University.
What To Expect
Thus far, the Warriors have played two games, one coming against Bethesda University, a 93-27 rout of the Flames. More recently, Jessup narrowly lost 66-65 to the University of Nevada. While the point disparity is vastly different, the way the Warriors have scored with efficiency remains the same.
Through two games, the Warriors are shooting 51.6-percent from the field and 41.7-percent from the three-point line. Both of those numbers are over a ten-percent increase of their totals from last season.
More specifically, the Warriors have shown they can score in all facets. On the block, senior
Miranda Zaragoza is off to a fast start averaging 16 PPG and 10.5 RPG. Fellow senior
Aycee Willis has proven she can hit the jump shot and create off the drive. When it comes to the three-point shot, freshmen
Maila Lepolo and
Victoria Delacroix are a combined 9-of-10 from distance.
Analyzing The Opponents
To start the five-game road trip, the Warriors will face three consecutive NCAA D-1 opponents. The first of those coming against the Lancers of Cal Baptist University on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Through three games, the Lacers are 3-0 and have three players averaging ten or more points. Britney Thomas's 17.7 PPG leads them.
Jessup's next game will come against the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Thunderbirds have only played one game so far, losing 57-48 to Utah Valley. Last season Southern Utah ended the year with an 18-13 record, 11-9 in the Big Sky Conference.
Wrapping the trio of games, the Warriors take on the Utah Valley Wolverines on Thursday at 4 p.m. As mentioned above, the Wolverines defeated Southern Utah in what has been their only game played thus far. For Utah Valley, Josie Williams is the leading scorer of their returners from last season (9.4 PPG), and she appears to have taken on the challenge to lead her team as she put up 19 points and ten rebounds in the win.
Hear from the Coach
Head coach
Hernando Planells is excited to continue adding to this team's foundation as they prepare for what will be a formidable conference schedule down the line.
Planells said, "Playing D-1 games, or any games for that matter, really prepares us for GSAC play – all of our games are building blocks!"
Road Warriors
Jessup has dealt with many cancelations so far this season as that has become somewhat normal in today's climate, but either way, they are prepared and excited to take the floor.
"We're just really excited to get back on the court and play some games!" said Planells. He ended with, "The team is focused and ready to continue growing and getting better! We always talk about playing anyone, anywhere, anytime, and that's what we're doing!"
