Women's tennis grabs its' first win in program history

Jon Toney led the Warriors to the program's first win in his first contest as a Jessup coach.

Box Score OAKLAND, Calif - A year ago, the Jessup women's tennis team held its' inaugural match at Westmont, and on Friday afternoon the team kicked off the 2020 season in historic fashion grabbing their first win in program history 5-4 at Mills College.

First-year coach Jon Toney said he was extremely pleased with what he saw from his team's performance. "Today was a tremendous display of our mental toughness. All four players in both singles and doubles produced and contributed to this win. We showed great resiliency as it seemed like every time Mills had an opportunity to turn a match around, our players stepped up in a big way."

The most impressive stat of the day was that the Warriors pulled out the victory while competing with only four active players while Mills had six.

The Warriors' most emphatic win came from Stephanie Alsman who surrendered just two sets on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot. The closest match came from Karen Godinez-Ramos who was competing in her first-ever collegiate match. Godinez-Ramos won the opening set but eventually lost 6-2, 2-6, 13-15 after a strong effort in the third frame.

McKenzie Hawkins won 6-4, 6-0 grabbing Jessup's only shut out of the day, and Melisa Hansen rounded out the singles players winning 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the team's best performance came from Alsman and Godinez-Ramos who won 8-2, and Hawkins and Hansen teamed up to win 8-6

The Warriors will look to continue their winning ways in their home opener Friday at 1 p.m. when they host No. 14 Westmont to open the GSAC schedule.

Toney said he hopes this win motivates his team to continue improving.

"Next week is the beginning of our conference season, so the level of play will be much tougher. We need to embrace the challenge and continue to improve our depth of shot, first-serve percentage, and solid crosscourt groundstrokes."
