Jessup Ends Their Idaho Trip with an 85-71 Loss to No. 7 Ranked Lewis-Clark State

Warriors compete against their second consecutive nationally ranked opponent; focus shifts to GSAC play beginning on Saturday

CALDWELL, Idaho - Ending a three-game trip in Idaho, Jessup took on the No. 7 ranked team in the country Monday afternoon in Lewis-Clark State College. Jessup worked hard to keep the game close, but a late run was too much to combat as they lost this battle of the Warriors, 85-71.

Monday marked the third game in four days for Jessup on the campus of The College of Idaho. Today's matchup was held on a neutral court after Jessup split a weekend series with the host school on Friday and Saturday.

For those who enjoy 3-point shooting, Monday's game was everything one could ask for. The two teams combined for 14 made 3-pointers in the opening half, but LCSC opened 4-for-5 from deep in the early going to pull ahead by as many as 11.

"It stretches your defense," Head Coach Lance Von Vogt said postgame on playing a team so efficient shooting from distance.

"We knew they were the best shooting team that we had faced yet this year...They did a great job of getting guys open looks, and I think we didn't do as good of a job as we've done in the past covering the shooters."

The hot hand of freshman Myles Corey, who scored 31 in the win Saturday, continued into Monday as again the young guard powered the Jessup offense. Scoring 19 first-half points, Corey was responsible for five of Jessup's six first-half triples.

He would finish with 27 points to his total, averaging 22.3 PPG during this three-game Idaho stretch.

Keeping Jessup alive early Monday were a pair of large runs. The first, an 11-2 run coming at the midway point of the half, evened the score at 17-17. The second, an 8-0 charge in the final minutes, sent Jessup into the locker room trailing by just three, 45-42.

Jessup came out of the break cold, missing their first seven attempts from the field as LCSC pushed the lead to 12. A corner three from Erik Kinnebrew ended the cold spell five minutes into the half.

Kinnebrew continued to be a bright spot for the Warriors Monday. Coming off the bench, the 6-7 senior scored a season-high 13 points while connecting on 5-of-11 from the field.

The shooting struggles continued, as Jessup shot 5-of-16 from the floor through the first 13 minutes of the second half, allowing LCSC to keep their lead consistently around 12 points.

"We came out flat in the second half," added Von Vogt. "That was shown not just in the shots we took, but in our first five possessions, four of them were turnovers.

"We have to do a better job coming out, being ready to go in the second half, just like we did against The College of Idaho on Saturday."

As just under six minutes remained on the clock, Jessup looked to have gotten the spark they needed, as junior Malik Corey converted a three-point play off a tough reverse layup. An 8-0 run ensued as Jessup cut the deficit to five, but a timeout by LCSC allowed them to regain composure and build the lead back to double-digits.

Making one last dash to cut the deficit, Jessup went on a 7-2 run with all points scored by the Corey brothers, cutting the score to five. LCSC turned it on one last time, ending the game on a 9-0 run thanks to two late threes.

LCSC finished the day 12-of-21 from distance. Hodges Bailey (5), Trystan Bradley (4), and Damek Mitchell (3) combined for all made attempts from three. Bradley led the way in scoring with 27, while Bailey added 20.

Jessup shot 41.3-percent from the field, connecting on 10-of-31 from three. Senior Tarren Storey-Way had yet another strong outing in the state of Idaho, totaling 15 points and seven rebounds. Malik Corey finished with 11 points to his five assists.

Finally, after months on the road and one of the most challenging schedules in the NAIA, Jessup gets to come home as they begin GSAC play this Saturday from Warrior Arena. In town will be San Diego Christian, with game time set for 1:30 p.m.

"It will be a great feeling to sleep in our own beds the night before a game," concluded Von Vogt as his team prepares for their much-anticipated home opener.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no fan attendance will be permitted inside Warrior Arena this year. All home games can be streamed live HERE.
