Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After battling from behind to win their seventh-straight on Thursday night, the red-hot Warriors clashed with the Hawks in San Diego on Saturday afternoon. This game belonged to the Jessup bigs as
Matthew Schmidt and
Matt Garrison combined for 30 points, and both posted season-highs in the 90-78 win.
Â
Coach
Lance Von Vogt commented on the play of his bigs, saying, "I've been waiting for Garrison and Schmidt to break out together and today was that day. For them to combine for 30 points, 13 rebounds, shoot a great percentage from the floor, and control the paint means good things moving forward."
Â
Jessup jumped ahead 5-0 early as
Malik Corey scored a layup and then assisted
Tim Strijaous on a three-pointer. Schmidt then got it going with a layup assisted by Malik and connected on another layup at the 17:12 mark to put Jessup ahead 9-5.
Â
SDC then embarked on an 11-4 run to take a 16-13 lead with 12:52 remaining in the half. From there, Jessup battled back to take a five-point lead with a 13-5 run. At the half, Jessup led 40-33.
Â
As the third quarter got underway, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run to stretch their advantage to 17. The lead grew further at the 10:40 mark as Garrison connected on a layup and Jessup led by 22, 66-44.
Â
Despite the large deficit, SDC would not go away as they mounted a large 32-10 run to pull within five points with 4:11 remaining. From there, Jessup locked in as
Jayden DeJoseph connected on two threes, then Garrison and Malik iced the game with free throws to give the Warriors a 90-78 win.
Â
Von Vogt commented on the large runs by both teams, saying, "I thought we brought great energy to start both halves, and San Diego just doesn't quit. They shot the ball so well in the second half, and when we went up by 22, they brought the lead back down and hit a bunch of threes. It was good to see us anchor back in."
Â
Malik Corey led the Warriors with a 19 point-12 assist double-double, Schmidt followed with a season-high 18, DeJoseph added 14, and Garrison rounded out the double-digit scorers with a season-high 12. Jessup shot a blistering 57.6 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from three (9-18). The Warriors held their opponent to 45.3 percent field goal shooting and forced 14 turnovers.
Â
Jessup improves to (9-2 OVR, 6-0 GSAC) and extends their win-streak to eight games with the win. The Warriors will prepare for a back-to-back at No. 5 Arizona Christian starting on Friday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
