SOLVANG, Calif. – The fall season continued Tuesday, with the Warriors teeing off at Alisal Ranch Golf Club for the 2022 TMU Danish Classic. It's a highlight day for the Warriors, as three Jessup golfers find themselves sitting in the top-five entering the final day of play.
"Another good day, both teams are going in the right direction," said head coach Isaac Sanchez. "Our men's team shot 28 shots better than they did here last year with 302. The women's team is also playing better than they did last year, so everything is going in the right direction."
Coming off her collegiate debut last week in Arizona, freshman
Jessica Burdick continues to make a name for herself with an opening round of 74 (+2). Burdick sits atop the leaderboard and holds a two-shot lead over Elizabeth Oloteo of Westmont College.
Burdick made three birdies on Tuesday, including two on her final nine holes to take the lead.
Also sitting near the top of the leaderboard is freshman
Matthew Shimizu. Shimizu birdied three holes on the front nine en route to an under-par round of 71 (-1), placing him in a tie for third. Shimizu trails co-leaders Jack Dudeck (The Master's) and Po-Yi Chen (Menlo) by three strokes.
Another Jessup golfer finding himself in the top five is sophomore
Ethan Leveque, whose even par round of 72 has him in a tie for fifth.
Rounding out the field in the men's tournament was
Sean Collins (+6, T28),
Arturo Zavala (+9, T36), and
Ryan Darrach (+17, 48). Both Zavala and Darrach are making their Jessup debuts this week.
Over to the women's tournament, other golfers in the field include
Corina Shaw (+12, T15),
Alyvia Mackey (+16, 22),
Macy Anderson (+21, 30), and
Ayasha Phillips (+40, 32).
Westmont leads the six-team women's tournament at the end of day one by nine strokes over Menlo. The Master's, the tournament host, lead Menlo by three strokes in the men's tournament.
Sanchez spoke about the excitement for the team, and tomorrow, adding "I'm just super excited about the chemistry on the team, and how everybody is improving, working hard, and doing great. Just totally blessed to be part of both these teams and the direction they're heading. We're looking forward to tomorrow."
The TMU Danish Classic will wrap up tomorrow from Alisal Ranch Golf Club. After that, Jessup will be back in action starting on Halloween when they travel to Carmel for the Pacific Coast Highway Invitational.
