SOLVANG, Calif. – Two tournaments into the fall season, and already the Warriors are bringing home a trophy. After taking the lead into day two of the TMU Danish Classic, freshman Jessica Burdick has claimed the first victory of her young collegiate career.
 
Burdick came into the week with just one collegiate tournament under her belt, taking fifth at the OUAZ Fall Invite a week ago. She closed out that week in Surprise with a round of 71 (-1), and the momentum carried over into this week as she took the day one lead at Alisal Ranch Golf Club.
 
Nursing a two-shot lead, Burdick made four birdies in her final round to post a score of 73 (+1), good enough to secure the tournament win.

Head coach Isaac Sanchez spoke about how Burdick was able to seal the victory, noting, "Jessica birdied one and four, both were par fives, to extend her lead. She then made a bunch of solid pars from there on in to extend her lead. Only her second start, to get a win, it's huge."
 
Also wrapping up the tournament with a strong second round was Matthew Shimizu, who posted a final round of 74 (+2) to finish one over for the tournament. Shimizu, a freshman as well, earns his first top-ten finish by taking a tie for fifth.
 
Jessup's men's team climbed up two positions from where they finished on Tuesday, taking a tie for fourth as a team. The Warriors posted a team score of 598, 67 strokes better than their performance in this event last fall.
 
Rounding out the pack of Warriors in the men's field were Ethan Leveque (T16, +4), Arturo Zavala (T24, +8), Sean Collins (T27, +9), and Ryan Darrach (T44, +25). Zavala posted the best final round on the team with a one-under 71.

"I was so happy for Arturo," added Sanchez on Zavala's final round. "He had a rough start in the first round but hung in there really well and has been playing well, so to see him have a tournament result like that is amazing."
 
In the women's tournament, competing for the Warriors were Corina Shaw (14, +21), Alyvia Mackey (T22, +30), Macy Anderson (30, +48), and Ayasha Phillips (32, +79). Jessup took fifth place.

"Everybody is improving on the women's side," added Sanchez. "We just keep getting better and better. Corina and Alyvia, both days had a chance to shoot in the 70s, it's all part of the learning process, but they are getting close."
 
The Warriors will look to continue their improvement when they next compete at the Pacific Coast Highway Invitational, hosted by Menlo College in Carmel.
