ROCKLIN, Calif. – The best runners in the Golden State Athletic Conference made their way to Rocklin on Saturday as Jessup hosted the 2022 GSAC Championship. On a cold and overcast Saturday, bids to nationals were clinched, while one Warrior secured the third All-GSAC selection of her career.
"It is always a privilege to serve as the host school for our conference championships and great for our student-athletes to get to run on their home course in front of family, friends, and peers," said head coach
Jeff Magley. "This year we knew it was going to be an extremely competitive race up front with two teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation on both the men's and women's side as well as two more teams receiving national votes."
Looking to join the list of all-conference runners for the third time, third-year runner
Azalea Prince placed 14th overall in the women's 5K with a time of 20:15. The mark secures Prince that All-GSAC selection, making her a perfect three-for-three at the GSAC Cross Country Championship.
"So proud of Azaela today, running to her third straight All-Conference honor in cross country," added Magley. "Especially against such a talented field. That was her goal all year to earn all-conference honors and to do that on our home course in front of her family was a great accomplishment."
The Jessup women took sixth in the eight-team field. The Master's University wins the team championship with a score of 18 points. The Mustangs swept the podium, with Ellen Palmgren winning the individual title.
Others in the field for the Jessup women included
Haley Borjas (22:02),
Elizabeth Shykowski (22:45),
Lacy Ceremony (22:46),
Hailey Hopkins (23:21), and
Vivianna Gardea (24:10).
For Borjas, it was a highlight day, as the morning began with her singing the national anthem. She ended the day with a new PR on the course.
In the men's 8K, it was The Master's claiming a perfect sweep in team competition, winning with a score of 24. Senzo Sokhela of Westmont is the 2022 individual men's champion. The Warriors placed seventh.
Logan Dodge (27:41),
Luciano Linares (27:48), Jonathan Conklin (27:51),
Noah Classen (28:32),
Josh Spiva (28:34),
Zachary Heberlein (28:36),
Travis Brown (28:51), and
Ethan Loomis (33:27) were in the men's field.
New PRs were set by Conklin, Linares, and Spiva.
Magley offered one final note to his seniors, "A special thank you to our seniors finishing the last cross country race of their collegiate careers with
Logan Dodge, Lucian Linares, and
Josh Spiva on the men's side and
Lacy Ceremony on the women's side. Their contributions to our program and their teammates over their careers have been inspiring."
Saturday marks the end of the 2022 cross country season. For many Warriors, training does not stop, as the track & field season begins in the early months of 2023.
