Leveque Leads the Jessup Fall Invitational After Round One

Leveque takes a four-shot lead into day two after an opening round of 75; Burdick shoots 83, leads the women’s field

ROCKLIN, Calif. – After three tournaments away from Rocklin to start the fall season, the Warriors got the chance to host on Monday. With bad weather looming over Rocklin, low scores were hard to come by as golfers navigated a challenging Whitney Oaks Golf Club.

The Jessup men lead the four-team field in the Jessup Fall Invitational by 12 strokes. Their cumulative score of 318 is a 27-shot improvement from their opening round totals on this course a year ago.

"I'm happy with today," said head coach Isaac Sanchez. "Continued improvement with 318. Whitney Oaks is never really a fair barometer score wise, because everybody knows it's a very difficult course. Over 20 shots better than we shot in the same tournament last year. I'm super happy with the direction the men's team is going."

Others in the men's field include Vanguard, Simpson, and Jessup's B-team.

With a low score of 75 (+4), Jessup's Ethan Leveque takes the lead into day two. Leveque navigated the back nine masterfully, shooting even par with one birdie. He totaled a stretch of six straight pars to keep his scorecard clean.

Others in the field for the leading Jessup squad are Arturo Zavala (3), Matthew Shimizu (T4), Sean Collins (T6), and Rex Rollins (T9). The Jessup B-team includes Ryan Darrach (T9), Mason Gray (T18), Juan Crespo (23), Joseph Mintmier (24), and Drake Kovaly (25). Daniel Johnson (T16) and Trevor Halloran (25) are in the field as individuals.

The Jessup women were also on the course Monday. Simpson University sent two golfers to compete in the field. With no team score for Simpson, the results posted will not be officially marked as tournament competition. Jessica Burdick shot the low round of 83.

"The women all played great under difficult conditions," added Sanchez. "Jessica, again, is the leading scorer. But her score is not a fair representation of how good she's playing."

Inclement weather is expected to hit Rocklin at any moment and this could affect tomorrow's final round. Teams will meet early Tuesday to determine whether the tournament will be completed or not.

UPDATE: Round two was canceled Wednesday morning after heavy rain hit Rocklin overnight. Scores from round one are now official.
