ROCKLIN Calif. – With four games still to go in the regular season, the Warriors are already rewriting the program's record books. After trailing at the halftime buzzer, (6) Jessup stormed out of the gates in the second half to secure a thrilling 77-66 victory over the visiting Menlo Oaks.
It was a total team victory, a trend the Warriors are proud of, as 36 of Jessup's 77 points came via the bench. On top of the scoring, head coach
Lance Von Vogt also called on three bench players to play over 20 minutes on Saturday.
Scoring off the bench in key moments was
Tarren Storey-Way. Of his 12 points, perhaps the two most exciting came on a fast break layup after he stole the ball, igniting a roar from the near-capacity Warrior Arena crowd.
"We have a next-man-up attitude, and we have a next play attitude," said Von Vogt. "And I thought our guys displayed that tonight and played against a great Menlo squad that, you know, came in, ready to earn the win."
The Warriors did not put together their sharpest first half in this one, shooting just 37-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Menlo led at the break, 32-28, backed by a 46-percent showing on their offensive end.
Jessup flipped a switch as the break, storming out of the gates to quickly take the lead on a 3-pointer from
Malik Corey. Storey-Way's exciting fast-break layup put the Warriors ahead by six in the closing minutes.
Thanks to a 53-percent showing from the floor in the second half, Jessup outscored the Oaks by 15 in the final period. The closing minute saw the Oaks continue to foul the Warriors, allowing them to put the contest well out of reach at the charity stripe.
"Our guys don't like losing," said Von Vogt on his team's answer in the second half. "We got hit in the mouth a little bit by Menlo in the first half, and we needed to respond, and our guys showed that grit, and we responded. We were able to make the plays offensively and defensively."
Making the majority of those free throw attempts was
Cashemin Williams. Williams led all players with 23 points, shooting 6-of-13 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the line.
Others in double-figures included
Jayden DeJoseph and
Tim Strijaous, who each dropped 11 points.
"We have a gritty team," said Von Vogt. "And that's what we base the entirety of our season on is being gritty. And having that competitive spirit, you know, being mentally tough, showing leadership on the court, being versatile, and adaptable to any situation."
Saturday night's victory secures a regular-season sweep of the Oaks, and it moves the Warriors to 24-2 overall on the season. With 24 wins, the Warriors have tied the program record for most regular-season wins, with still four games left to play.
Perhaps the biggest of those four remaining games comes next on the schedule, as the Warriors once again take on No. 8 Arizona Christian, this time in Glendale.
ACU took the first meeting between these two schools. The final regular-season matchup comes on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (PST).
