ROCKLIN, Calif. – The accolades continue to roll in for Jessup's men's basketball program. The NAIA announced Thursday morning the 2022 All-American team, and featured on that list are two Warriors who are rewarded for phenomenal seasons on the floor.
Having already staked their name as All-GSAC players, guards
Cashemin Williams and
Myles Corey can now add All-American to their resume. The Jessup backcourt makes up two of five GSAC players to receive a spot on the All-American team.
"I couldn't think of two more deserving guys to earn All American than Cash and Myles," said head coach
Lance Von Vogt. "These two represented themselves, their teammates, and the university in a first-rate manner all year. Remember, you don't get these awards without winning, so both of these guys affected winning in a big way. And their teammates affected winning in a big way and they are part of these recognitions too!"
Williams, the reigning GSAC Player of the Year, was named a First-Team All-American, joining Keith Phillips (2018-19) as the only two players from Jessup to earn first-team honors. On top of the All-American stature, Williams was one of nine players named to the 2022 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship All-Tournament Team.
"Cash as GSAC Player of the Year and now First-Team All American is an amazing accomplishment and credit to his hard work, determination, competitive spirit, and heart. He is truly a blessing to coach," Von Vogt added on his first-year point guard.
The first-year Warrior averaged 18.4 PPG this season and featured the fourth-highest three-point percentage in the country at 52.8-percent. Williams ended the season with 661 points, 201 assists, and 133 rebounds. He sets new Jessup records for three-point percentage, assists, assists per game (5.4), games played (37), and minutes played (1,211).
His point totals trail only Phillips' 2018-19 campaign of 694 points. In addition, Williams sits just 39 assists away from the all-time career record for Jessup basketball.
Williams competed in four games during the 2022 NAIA National Tournament, helping lead Jessup to their first-ever quarterfinal appearance. In the tournament, Williams averaged 20 points and 6.5 assists per game.
"Cash is such a force on the court in every way," added Von Vogt. "Opposing teams can never leave him unaccounted for or he will make them pay. It is no surprise to me that he made the NAIA Championship All-Tournament team. Well deserved."
Corey joins Williams on the All-American team, earning Honorable Mention honors after competing in just 30 games this season. Corey missed seven games this season due to an injury but made his return in Jessup's 90-78 victory over Warner (Fla.) in the NAIA Opening Round, scoring 13 points in his first game back.
Von Vogt said of Corey, "Myles earning All-American Honorable Mention after enduring an injury that would have ended most people's season is unreal. This guy bled Warrior blue and is one of the most dynamic players in the country. Myles is a fantastic offensive ball player but his on ball defense separates him from others. He's a true two-way player and one of the best teammates you will ever find."
The second-year guard was named to his second All-GSAC team this season. He averaged 14.9 PPG to pair with a 50.5-percent showing from the floor. He averaged 13.5 PPG in four appearances in the NAIA National Tournament.
Corey's best game of the season came in a 106-84 victory over Vanguard, in which he scored 26 points and converted on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. He surpassed double-digits in all but three games this season, topping 20 points eight times.
The highlight play of the season came via Corey with his posterizing dunk in Jessup's January 22 victory at San Diego Christian.
Joining these two from the GSAC on the All-American team are Angelo Johnson (Second-Team; Arizona Christian), Josh Powell-Davis (Honorable Mention; Hope International), and Josiah De'la Cerda (Honorable Mention; OUAZ).
The Warriors won a program-record 30 games this season, including a record three games in the NAIA National Tournament. The 2021-22 season also marks the first time in program history where two Warriors find themselves on the All-American Team.
Jessup will return both of their All-American guards next season as they look to make another run in March. "Looking forward to next year with both of these guys back," said Von Vogt. "The future is bright for Jessup Basketball."
