LINCOLN, Calif. – The Warriors got their first look at ranked competition Friday as No. 21 Jessup welcomed to schools from the Cascade Conference to Wilson Park. On a day that started with a win, the nightcap turned into an extra inning thriller that ultimately saw the Warriors settle for a split.
Tossing her first complete game of the season in game one was
Katie Blankenheim. Blankenheim held Corban to three runs on seven hits during her seven innings of work. The win improves her to 3-1 on the season.
Run support came in the third as
Olivia Dominguez found a gap to drive in Jessup's first run of the day. Dominguez would later score on a
Sam Lorge RBI single.
Trailing 3-2 in the fourth, the Warriors evened the score on a sacrifice fly. Dominguez then added her second RBI of the day, beating out a two-out infield single that was originally called out. After discussion, the call was changed, extending the inning and driving in the winning run.
Jessup added two more in the fifth, sending them to a 7-3 victory.
Next up was the No. 13 ranked Yotes of the College of Idaho, the first ranked opponent on the schedule for the Warriors this season.
Jessup's defense was elite early in this one, starting in the first inning when the Warriors gunned down a COI runner at third. More help came in the third when a double to right-center looked to be driving in the first run of the day, but a great relay threw out the run at home.
The top of the fifth saw the next great defensive play when
Karlie Bilbrey threw out what could have been the tying run at home.
But for all of Jessup's excellence defensively, with two out in the sixth, everything flipped. A two out error allowed the tying run to score, eventually sending the game to extra innings. The Warriors then committed two throwing errors in the eight, leading to five COI runs scoring.
Jessup, who scored first on a fourth inning single from
Aaliyah Pineda, added a run in the eight on
Sarah Giles' RBI single, but the rally would not be extended.
Terra Goetz gets handed the loss after tossing all eight innings. Goetz (2-1) allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits, striking out four in the process.
The Warriors will get another shot at the Yotes tomorrow, but first they will have to face Corban again. That game is scheduled for noon, with the rematch of Jessup and COI following.
