Warriors Split GSAC Opener in San Diego

Cole’s game-two grand slam lifts Jessup in the run column; Jessup will play two tomorrow, with only one counting towards the conference record

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – The GSAC season is finally upon us, and after ten games at McBean Park to start the season, the Warriors finally got on the road Friday as they took on San Diego Christian. With an opportunity late in game one to steal a win, Jessup rather had to settle for a split as they start the conference season 1-1.

Friday started with Max Moreno on the bump for the Warriors in game one. Moreno tossed 4.1 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.

The Warriors turned to Jason Riviello, Joey Miller, and Caleb Markwith out of the bullpen. The pen limited damage, holding SDCC to 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and walking none.

Jessup struck first as the red-hot Brandon Springer went deep for the fourth time in his last four games, as his two-run two-run shot cleared the fence in left-center. Looking for an early shutdown inning, Jessup would surrender four runs in the first as the Hawks quickly went ahead 3-2.

The Warriors had a chance to climb back late in the eight, starting with Dylan Cole's sac fly that made it a 5-4 game. Jessup then loaded the bases with just one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended any threat of a rally, securing a 5-4 win for the Hawks.

Game two saw head coach Trevor Paine hand the ball to Trevor Arnston, and the righty did not disappoint. Arnston allowed one run on four hits over his six innings of work, earning his second victory of the season.

Cole provided the bulk of the run support in this one, starting with his second sac fly of the day. The big blast came in the second when Cole launched a grand slam over the right field fence, putting his side ahead 6-0.

The Warriors added more run support in the middle innings as they cruised into a 9-1 victory, securing a split.

"I'm really happy with the way we responded in game two," said Paine. "We were focused and energetic the whole game. Arntson did a great job of attacking and pitching with tempo. Cole gave us the big swing we had been looking for all day. Hopefully we can reproduce that effort for two games tomorrow."

The series wraps up tomorrow from Lakeside HS in Lake Elsinore as the two sides will play another doubleheader. With the GSAC shifting to three-game series in 2023, only game one will count toward the conference record.

Saturday's action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
